It's hard to believe that U2 was ever an opening act, but they were. They were the opening act for the J Geils Band for the American leg of their "Freeze Frame" tour...They were allowed to perform 7 songs.
A year later they were at the US Festival blowing everyone away...and they'd never be anything but a headliner again...
