Last night was my first show of the Humphreys Concerts Series for 2026, and becuase it's Throwback Thursday, it is appropriate that I write about one of the best Thowback bands ever: DEVO. We watched the entire concert from the docks just across from the venue...as it's always a party there!
Mark Mothersbaugh and Jerry Casale are in their mid 70's now, but you would never know it by this performance. They opened with a couple of "Don't Shoot" and "Peek A Boo" and shortly after the donned their red plastic hats and freighttrained through many songs off the "Freedom of Choice" album including their biggest hit "Whip It" and what I think is their best song ever "Girl You Want".
They left the stage and quickly came back in thos yellow rain suit outfits that most people first saw when they performs "Satifaction" on Satuday Night Live back in the late 1970's. The didn't play the Stones cover, but blazed through virtually every other song on their debut album "Are We Not Men? We Are Devo".
It was a sight to see these musical pioneers play aggressively and impressively through ever song. The end with "Spudboy" singing "Beatuful World" off the "New Traditonalists" album.
There was definietly a sense of nostalgia, but the band didn't give you time to lament about music of days gone by...they kept everyone on their feet and jumpin around for the entire 90 minut set.
Great show!
