Rage Against The Machine - Bulls On Parade
Today is the anniversary of Rage Against The Machine appearing on NBC's Saturday Night Live in 1996 after which they were banned from the show. Their two-song performance was cut to one song when the band attempted to hang inverted American flags from their amplifiers. SNL saw the band doing this in rehearsals, which was commonplace for their live performances. Afraid it might offend Steve Forbes (yes, billionaire, Forbes magazine, former presidential candidate Steve Forbes) who was hosting that evening, the SNL staff asked the flags be removed. The band agreed but their stage crew tried to quickly hang the flags before the performance went live. SNL won that battle though, the flags came down, and that was the last of Saturday Night Live for Rage, who were banished from the building without getting to perform a second song. Whoever thought it was a good idea to book Steve Forbes and Rage Against the Machine for the same show clearly didn't do much research, regardless, the decision has certainly made rock history. Also the band just rescheduled their tour for 2022 and I’m feeling like giving you an injection of RATM today since what’s one more year at this point (she said sarcastically but also, gets it). The band performance footage for this video comes from two separate shows in Sydney Australia, including Sydney Big Day Out and Hordern Pavilion. Several artists are also featured in the video including the work of Barbara Kruger, Phantom Street Artist Joey Krebs and even Tom Morello’s own handy work. It was directed by Peter Christopherson.
