Elastica - Connection
A not even two and a half minutes Elastica’s “Connection” was a delicious brit-pop snarling bopper, but as we’ve learned many times in these 90’s features; you’ve gotta give credit where it’s due or Johnny Law is comin’ for ya.
Elastica was heavily influenced by a British punk band called Wire, and I have a hard time believing they didn’t note the obvious lift of their song “Three Girl Rhumba” from their 1977 album Pink Flag. Or hey, maybe they just didn’t think the song was ever going to get big enough for it to matter, but it did. If you’ve never heard Wires before, here you go.
Call it an homage, but a writing credit would have saved the band some trouble. (The issue was settled out of court so we don’t have the details). It’s a shame because the rest of the song is so awesome and I gotta imagine that cost them some cash in the long run, especially since the song has been used in TV shows and movies.
There’s two videos for this song the censored version and an “uncensored” version (below) that’s got more naked people which was supposed to parody to The Beloved, “Sweet Harmony,” video. If you’re a nerd you’ll notice their video for another track “Waking Up” is identical and was filmed the same day. Work smarter not harder kids.
