If you are celebrating that special day with that special someone don't screw it up! Here are some tips that are NOT gender specific:

Don't forget- if you made plans don't forget what they were or the time and details... did you make that reservation like you promised last week?
Don't buy unromantic gifts- she doesn't want a toaster and he doesn't want socks.
Don't repeat- just because it worked last year, doesn't mean doing the same thing will work this year. It shows a real lack of commitment to creativity. if you have pictures from last year, make sure you don't wear the same outfit...you know you'll take pics, so don't make the pics confusing
If you don't know size don't buy clothing...if you buy too big you'll offend either gender!
Don't talk about previous Valentine's Days with other significant others..."Hey my ex and I did this and it was a blast...let's do that"- not going to win you points or get you kissed.
Don't go see a sad or scary movie- Schindler's List or The Exorcist aren't great date movies, so they are even worse on Valentine's Day.
If you significant other is into Valentine's Day and you aren't....too bad..at least act like it....the best day for you could still be February 15th...so don't screw it up!
