Passion Project: Mike Peters of The Alarm

As I continue to explore people's Passion Projects, I thought I'd include a long time friend of mine- Mike Peters from the Alarm. We've been friends since my first interview with the band in 1983 and Mike and his wife Jule's struggles..and triumphs over Cancer have been well documented. Mike and Jules have never been shy about talking about their journeys and Mike's "Love, Hope Strength Foundation" has raised large amounts of money and have helped build a bone marrow database at The Alarm concerts.

Mike enlists the help of his rock friends while performing at extreme locations to help raise money and awareness for cancer research.

Below is info for the next event. Mike recently announced at a concert I was at the Billy Duffy from The Cult would be joining him as he Rock the Canyon.

The following is the message and invite from "Love, Hope Strength":

Join Love Hope Strength in 2018, along with co-founder, cancer survivor and musician Mike Peters and his band The Alarm, for a unique musical adventure – Rock The Canyons, that will take you deep into the heart of the Grand Canyons of America including Bryce, Zion and Arizona’s Grand Canyon – one of the best natural wonders of the world on one of the best charity events imaginable!

From October 14th – 21st Love Hope Strength will host Rock The Canyons including a finale concert with The Alarm and very special guests in the entertainment capital of the world – Las Vegas.

Love Hope Strength will begin the Rock The Canyons challenge with an acclimatisation trek through Sedona, with its popular red rock formations, also known as Red Rock Country. Some consider this to be the spiritual vortex to the south-west of America and it’s not surprising why – Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon rival many national parks the World over. Throughout the duration of Rock The Canyons, Mike Peters will provide the musical soundtrack for the hike by performing acoustic performances along the way.

Our descent into the Grand Canyon is along one of the most iconic routes, the Bright Angel Trail. This trail was originally used by Native Americans to access the life-giving waters of the Indian Gardens 3,000ft below. We hike the same route, descending through 750 million years of rock layers. Our aim is to finish at Plateau point where brave souls can inch towards the edge to catch a glimpse of the mighty Colorado River.

We continue our Grand Canyon adventure on the South Kaibab Trail, which has equally epic views, including the aptly named Ooh-Ahh Point, before taking in the views at Cedar Ridge. Once back at the rim, we take in our last views before heading to Lake Powell.

Our adventure continues further as we explore and conquer trails in Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. Colourful spires of rock, called hoodoos, create a surreal appearance throughout the park and at night more than 7,500 stars are visible at Bryce Canyon. Zion Canyon is the total opposite of Grand Canyon! At the Grand Canyon, you can stand on the edge and look down, but at Zion Canyon you will look up from the bottom to view the beautiful sandstones.

Once we have successfully explored these natural wonders, we then head off to Las Vegas to celebrate our trekking achievements at a private party in Las Vegas, and then we shall enjoy a finale concert by The Alarm and special guests.

We assure you that each day of this charity challenge will give participants a different perspective of these breathtaking wonders with an up close and personal musical experience.
