Temecula Valley Museum Hosts New Exhibit Wandering Spirit: African Wax

"Wandering Spirit: African Wax Prints" is a tribute to the century-old, handmade designs and patterns on textiles that originated in Indonesia. They were later copied and industrialized by Europeans and exported to Africa. This exhibit traces the developmental pathway of the African wax print and tells how these fabrics reflect the stories, dreams, and personalities of the people who wear them. The exhibition opens Friday, May 17, 2019 and will remain on display until Sunday, June 16, 2019 at the Temecula Valley Museum (28314 Mercedes Street).

The history of the African wax print is paved along colonial trade routes and globalization in the postcolonial era. Though not originally African, these textiles have become ingrained in African culture and society, and continue to be loved and identified as their own.

To celebrate the opening of this new exhibit, the Temecula Valley Museum will be hosting a free event on Saturday, May 25, 2019. Textile artist Allyson Allen will host a trunk show and offer insight into her pieces inspired by African and American history beginning at 11:00 am. Then, at 12:30 pm, members of Dream Shapers will be performing an exciting African Drum and Dance Show. Please visit TemeculaCA.gov/Register to sign up for this event.
