"TRAVELING STORIES" SERVICING CHILDREN WELCOMES FOUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS

Traveling Stories enters its 10th year with the addition of four new board members.

“Since 2010, Traveling Stories has provided literacy services to thousands of children in San Diego, but there are still so many who need our support,” said Emily Moberly the founder/CEO of Traveling Stories. “We recruited these new board members to help the organization grow to new levels to be able to serve more children.”

Eighty-two percent of children in low-income families cannot read proficiently by the 4th grade. Of those children, two-thirds will end up in jail or on welfare (Annie E Casey Foundation, NAEP). Traveling Stories strives to disrupt these statistics by hosting free StoryTent programs at malls and farmers’ markets in vulnerable communities throughout the county. This year, the organization helped over 1,600 children read more often for fun.

Traveling Stories’ new board members include Jennifer Abma, an attorney at IPLA, Katie Blomberg, a Senior Preferred Banker Associate at First Republic Bank, Rebekah Cahalin, the General Manager & Head of Operations at IDW Publishing, and Cara Morrison, the Chief Financial Officer at IDW Publishing. Morrison has been appointed Treasurer.

Among other changes, Windus Fernandez Brinkkord of Trilogy Financial Services has been elected Board Chair and Sarah Sternberg of Songa Designs International has been appointed Secretary.

“The excitement and energy of our board heading into 2020 will help further the direction and growth of Traveling Stories,” said new Board Chair Fernandez Brinkkord. “We are passionate and united in helping provide children with as much opportunity to read as we can.”
