The following comes from the City of Temecula:
The City of Temecula, Community Services Department, Temecula Valley Unified School District, and the Temecula Valley Museum announce a new Student Art Mural in Sam Hicks Monument Park (28300 Mercedes Street). This temporary public art piece celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month and will be unveiled on OCT 12, 2021 at 3:00 pm.
The Student Art Mural Project seeks to support emerging artists by providing a space to showcase their craft. Each month, student artists have the opportunity, facilitated by Bigfoot Graphics, to paint a mural on varying topics. This month, in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the mural's message is "Hispanic Pride". Created by Palomar College student Cheyenne Hernandez, her goal was to include shapes of all the Hispanic Nations around the world, choosing very bright colors to represent the tremendous culture, heritage and passion that is alive within Hispanic people. Youth contributors who assisted with the project include Cora Ripley (12), Abigail Messin (13), Bailey McEntire (14), Sophia Guevara (13), Hailey Schmidt (12), Crew Haverlock (13), Lylah Ramsey (10), William Oats (13) & Samuel Whitmore (10)
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from SEP 15 to OCT 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Hispanic Heritage Week was first proclaimed by President Johnson in 1968 by Presidential Proclamation. Between 1969 and 1988 Presidents Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan also gave annual proclamations for Hispanic Heritage Week. National Hispanic Heritage Month was first proclaimed by President George H. W. Bush on SEP 14, 1989. Since 1989, all Presidents have given a Presidential Proclamation to mark National Hispanic Heritage Month.
The mural will be displayed in Sam Hicks Monument Park beginning the second week of October, and will be officially unveiled on OCT 12, 2021 at 3 pm. The public is welcome to attend the unveiling. The museum also celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month through facts and free crafts in the Temecula Valley Woman’s Club Art and Education Room. All are welcome! The Student Art Mural Project is organized by Temecula Valley Museum. Local art students are invited to paint murals on canvas that will be displayed in Sam Hicks Monument Park monthly.
