I used to go to the Solana Beach street fair, known as "Fiesta del Sol" every year for many years. COVID stopped that, but now as the festival has returned , so have I. Here's my review:
The GOOD- This festival is now, and always has been, free. When you get to see a band as good as the English Beat at a free show, you gotta go! I've literally seen the band dozens of times over the years and Dave Wakeling never disappoints! He gave another spirited performance at the festival!
A pleasant surprise this year was the parking. Normally a real challenge. it might have been the cool weather, or the fact that there was many other events going on on the same day, but I counted my blessings as we parked VERY close by.
The BAD- This festival used to take place with the stage in the park above the beach. The have installed playground equipment there so the stage was moved from a place with grass and a view to a parking lot...and the ambience has been lost. That part is really a shame
The performance area is a giant overcrowded parking lot that had a fair share of drunkards staggering around spilling beer by the time the English Beat came on. The band plays at the Belly Up a few times a year. I would MUCH MORE recommend spending the money, and buying a ticket to see the English Beat there- you will have a MUCH better experience.
The Recommendation: I have to go with a "wait and see" for 2024. IF they have a great band like the English Beat again, I lean YES. If they have a better stage area, I would say "definitely yes". the bottom line- it is a free festival, so if you've got the time and you like the music, give it a try... just don't have too high of expectations if they don't change the performance area.
