Throwback Thursday: "Alternative Music Hall of Fame" Debuts

Longtime fans of our Alternative Music format now have something they can really support and enjoy.

Here's news from the newly created and launched "Alternative Music Hall of Fame":

Alternative Music Hall of Fame™ Honors the Legends of Alternative Music

2024 Induction Class Nominations is Live for Fan Voting

Los Angeles, CA (April 6, 2024) – In recognition of a transformative musical movement that has profoundly touched the lives of millions of music enthusiasts globally, the Alternative Music Hall of Fame™ (The Alt Hall™) has been unveiled. Concurrent with this announcement, the Alternative Music Hall of Fame™ invites fans of alternative music to cast their votes online for their top 10 artists.

"Music serves as a powerful medium that resonates with countless individuals. Establishing genre-specific halls of fame is a meaningful way to pay homage to the music and its iconic trailblazers," remarked Kurt Christian, co-founder and executive director of Alternative Music Hall of Fame™. "We are thrilled to introduce the Alternative Music Hall of Fame™ to celebrate this distinctive group of artists and to inspire new talents in generations to come."

In September 1988, Billboard Magazine introduced the term “alternative” into their charting system to reflect the rise of the format across radio stations in the United States which were playing music from more underground, independent, and non-commercial rock artists. The Alternative Music Hall of Fame™ uses the term “alternative” as the umbrella term over numerous subgenres organized below it.

The Alternative Music Hall of Fame™ acknowledges the legends of alternative music across various subgenres, including (but not limited to): punk, post-punk, new wave, ska, two-tone, synth-pop, gothic rock, new romantic, rockabilly revival, grunge, alternative rock, mod revival, reggae, rocksteady, alternative metal, dark wave, early influencers from the 1960s-1970s, Britpop, surf rock, indie rock, post-rock, post-grunge, alternative hip hop, experimental, emo, and electronic rock.

To commemorate the launch, the Alternative Music Hall of Fame™ will be unveiling the first batch of hall of fame legends nominations. Furthermore, voters will automatically receive membership to the Alternative Music Hall of Fame™.

The criteria for artist nominees include a minimum of 20 years of contribution to alternative music and assessment based on talent (25%), creativity (25%), impact (25%), and influence on the alternative music community (25%).

“We are honored to state that commercial success or lack thereof is not a voting factor,” says Lionel Max Pasamonte, co-founder and producer of the Alternative Music Hall of Fame™.

Fan voting is currently open online and will conclude on May 27th, 2024. Final selections will be chosen by our 2024 Inductions Committee made up of artists, historians, and members of the music industry. The results will be announced in December 2024 during the Alternative Hall of Fame™ Induction Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles hosted by Richard Blade. Fans can vote at www.althall.org.
